Review on Instagram

Probably you heard the news some months back that Facebook bought Instagram.

Although this app/service was launched in October 2010, and has snowballed in popularity ever since, not everybody knows an Instagram from a telegram.

If you've been sitting on the Instagram sidelines, here's your chance to find out what all the fuss is about and get started using Facebook's new baby.

What is Instagram?
Instagram is an app first of all, but also a social network. The Instagram app, available for Android and iOS, can apply a variety of filters and effects to your photos. It also connects you to the Instagram network so you can share your modded snapshots and see those of other users. All this happens on your phone, though shared photos routinely land on Facebook, Twitter, and so on.

What do Filters Mean?
A filter makes changes to your photo -- sometimes subtle, sometimes significant. Instagram has 18 filters, most with nondescript names like Earlybird, Hudson, and Sutro. With one tap, a snapshot can be made to look like it was shot in the 60s or came out of a scrapbook or was taken with a Polaroid camera.

What More can Instagram do to a Photo?
The app offers two other noteworthy capabilities.
1. It can frame photos with rounded corners, a white or black border, ragged edges or some combination of the three (depending on the selected filter).
2. It can add a straight or circular motion-blur effect, leaving any given area in focus while blurring the background. That's Instagram's coolest feature.

Why is Instagram Popular?
Sometimes I wonder. It was far from the first app to offer photo filters, and its interface is anything but intuitive. But once you figure out how everything works, Instagram is pretty fun. And it shares effortlessly with the likes of Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and Tumblr. Yet, it's free.

How do I Get Started?
First of all, download and install the Instagram app on your smartphone or tablet. The first time you run it, you will need to sign up for an account, which is quick and painless. From there you will want to familiarize yourself with the five buttons that span the bottom of the screen: Home, Popular, Camera, News, and Profile.

The "Home" shows you the latest photos from friends and other users you follow. The "Popular" serves up a batch of the latest and most-liked pictures -- a good way to get a feel for the app's capabilities. The "Camera" opens your device camera, allowing you to snap newly filtered/framed shots on the spot. But you can also tap the library button (represented in the iOS version by two overlapping squares) to choose existing photos you want to tweak.

The "News" reveals news about who you are following and who is following you. Finally, the "Profile" allows you find friends, review your filtered photos, edit your profile, and configure sharing with the six currently supported social networks: Facebook, Flickr, Foursquare, Posterous, Twitter, and Tumblr.

Fairfax Group gives BlackBerry $4.7 Billion Buyout Offer

BlackBerry hasn't had a great run in the recent times and the company has been losing ground rather quickly. The last few quarters have been rough for the once dominant Canadian tech company, and depleting market share has resulted in its Board of Directors deciding to sell the company.

Ever since then, the company's board has been pushing for a quick sale before the end of the year, and it looks like the firm has struck a deal with a consortium led by Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. The deal totals some $4.8 billion with each share valued at $9.

BlackBerry, the company known for manufacturing smartphones for professionals has given the group a time frame of six weeks to conduct due diligence and if things go alright, the final agreement is expected to be signed on November 4.

In the meantime, BlackBerry will continue to look for alternative offers, but according to the intent agreement, Fairfax group will have all the rights to match the offers if any.

The Fairfax group, which currently owns a 10% stake in the company, has several partners who have opted to remain anonymous until the diligence is completed. Fairfax CEO Prem Watsa said that there are no strategic players or other technology firms in the consortium.

Leaked Android 4.4 KitKat Screenshots

Supposed screenshots from Android 4.4 KitKat has emerged, potentially giving us a peek of some of the UI changes which the new OS has in store. The screen captures reveal redesigned phone dialer and messaging app.

The screenshots reveal UI changes

The phone dialer sports a light color scheme which is a notable departure from its current look. The messaging app on the other hand, has seen its controls get moved to the top right corner in comparison to the bottom setup we've grown familiar to.

Furthermore, the screenshots reveal lighter color icons in the status bar. The latter’s color scheme also appears to be changing depending on the one of the app in use.

Android 4.4 KitKat is widely expected to be released in the second half of October, alongside a Nexus 5 smartphone. A revamped Nexus 10 is also more than likely to break cover with the new Android version.

Apple sold 9 million iPhone 5s and 5c in its First Weekend

Apple prides itself on its opening weekend sales each year and there's always that word record somewhere to be found. This year Apple boasts 9 million sold iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c units in the first weekend.

Apple didn't provide specifics on which iPhone sold how many, but the two new iPhones combined for a significantly larger win over last year's 5 million iPhone 5 units opening weekend.

Also iOS 7 is now running on more than 200 million devices, making it one of the fastest updates in history. The updated OS launched just two days before the new iPhones.

Apple is reporting low supply for the new iPhone 5s flagship, with many online orders expecting to be shipped in the coming weeks.

Update: BlackBerry Messenger Launch for Android and iPhone

After a long period, BlackBerry finally decided to release BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) on the iPhone and Android platforms. The dates were set; September 21 for the Android version and September 22 for the iPhone version. And when it was time, they dropped the app.

The first drama arrived in the form of September 21 coming and going with no sign of the Android version. Thankfully, the company kept their word and released the iPhone version on September 22 but the Android version was still not available despite the fact that it had a one day advantage. And finally, the company pulled even the iPhone version from the App Store.

According to their blog, an unreleased version of BBM for Android was leaked online, which saw over 1.1 million people using it in the first 8 hours. This version apparently had issues, so BlackBerry had to stop the launch of the legit versions for whatever reasons so that they could sort the issues with the leaked version, which doesn’t really make much sense.

Anyhow, BlackBerry is still working on releasing both versions of the app once again but hasn’t given any dates this time. Those who downloaded the iPhone version can apparently use it again after a short period of the service being down. We’ll let you know when the app hits the respective stores properly again. Until then, try and stay away from all the fakes that are floating around, especially on the Play Store.

BBM for Android Not Available in Google Play Store while BBM for iPhone is Available for Download in Apple iTunes

This post is for those that have been patiently waiting for the BBM for Android which ought to have been on Google Play Store since yesterday (Saturday) 12noon Nigerian time.

However allegedly due to some issues with the Android version which includes server problems, fake BBM names and apks surfacing on the Google Play Store, the BBM for Android suffered a major setback which will be worked on soonest as expected.

It would be important to note that the iPhone version of the BBM app is already making its way into all Apple App Stores worldwide.

It was first seen in Apple App World Australia and then move to other countries App Store and it's already available in India. Apparently in no time, it should be released worldwide by today Nigerian time.

Still, no sign of the Android version of BBM...whew! Even the leaked version is having a hard time displaying PINS and logging in people. This may be due to server overload.

Anyway, you guys should hang in there; surely it will make its way to Google Play Store for download and as always will be on the lookout and notify you guys when it finally hits the Play Store.

If you are an iPhone user, you can download your BBM for Iphone: Here

Grand Theft Auto V Sales make it past $1 billion in Only Three Days

Already the fastest-selling video game in the world, Grand Theft Auto V reached yet another milestone today. The Rockstar Games creation made it past $1 billion in worldwide sales only three days after hitting the retail shelves.

GTA V’s publisher Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. reckons that the video game title is the fastest entertainment property to reach the ten-digit milestone. This includes video games, as well as feature films.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is a real slouch compared to GTA V with fifteen days needed to reach the highly coveted $1 billion mark. Take two hasn’t revealed the number of GTA V copies sold yet, though I suspect that the number will be quite hefty.

Etisalat Multi-Device Plan: Share your Data

Etisalat Nigeria, a few days ago introduced Multi Device plan, a new offering that lets customers share the data plan on one SIM across multiple SIMs. The concept of data sharing isn’t a new one as both Globacom and MTN have different implementations of the same concept already available to customers, but Etisalat’s implementation is a bit different.

Etisalat’s Multi Device plan basically lets you make up to four clones of your primary SIM with new, previously unregistered and non-activated SIM cards. The four new secondary SIMs get the properties of the primary SIM including the phone number and as a result can access the data plan on it. Unlike the offerings of the other networks, you can’t share data to an existing line that’s already been in use. Also if you put a secondary SIM inside a voice activated device, both devices would ring when a call is made to that number. So the ideal scenario is one where your primary SIM is the one in your phone and the secondary SIMs distributed among your other data devices. (modems, tablets, etc).Etisalat multi device plan

So how do you share your data on Etisalat’s Multi Device plan?

Some of us have changed the look or design of our blog/websites without taking a screenshot of it. It’s not necessary though but I decided to Google if there is a way I could see the previous looks of my blog.

Fortunately, I stumbled on "Google Cache" and the "Wayback machine". While the "cache" maintained by Google only displays the snapshot of a page as it appeared when last it was indexed; the "Wayback machine" displays snapshots of a site throughout its history.
